Hi this is Andrew on behalf of Expert Village.com and in this next clip I am going to be discussing how you would determine the amount of thread to use for hemming the cuff of the pants.
Now in the case of cotton or polyester pants, typical slack material, you are going to want to use about 3 feet of thread. That will get you all the way around in one cuff. Now what you would do is pull out 3 feet which is typically about one arm length and then you would double that so that you would 3 feet of doubled thread to work with. Now once you do that you are going to want to go around and finish the hem. At any point and time you want to stop, you can. It is really simple. All you have to do is pretend like you are finishing the hem at the end of it by tying off the knot as was shown in another clip and then when you come back to it you could just start using that knot stitch that you tied as the anchor stitch for continuing the hem. So once you know how to stop and start the hem you can come back to sewing the hem at any particular time. That makes it less of a critical issue in determining the amount of thread you are going to use.
If you are using jean material like this, you are going to want to use a little bit of a thicker thread which is going to be a larger needle with a larger eye hole but this is also going to mean that you are going to use more thread. So you are going to want for the jean material probably to use about half as much more so we are doing with between 4 and 5 feet doubled. And again if you want to be conservative that is fine because if you run out of thread you can just tie it off and start again. That is how you determine how much thread is used based on the material for hemming the legs of pants.
