Hi, this is Andrew on behalf of Expert Village.com and today I am going to be showing you how to sew on a button onto a mans long jacket that is a double layer of polyester and a single layer of silk as lining that we have to go through.
Now I have already discussed what thread to use, what needle to use, what type of button to use and the measurements of the distance between the buttons that is already on the jacket. So if we wanted to replace one of the buttons that had fallen off with one that came with the jacket, we would first start by starting the needle from the back because that is where all of the thread is going to wind up that we are going to cut off at the end and you don't want that to be seen on the outside of the jacket. So you want to come up from underneath where you marked that spot for the button and pull the needle through. And you want to string that through one of the holes in the button and let the button fall as close as it can to the jacket itself. The important thing is to get a similar cross pattern as the other buttons on the jacket so that it looks the same.
There are different ways of going through the button while doing this. You can go through one side and rapid 6.7 times 10 times and then go through the other side and do the same thing or in the case of this jacket, it actually criss-crosses. You want to go through the jacket and pull the thread tight. You want to go back through it again. If you look on the bottom of the jacket you will the stitching pattern so that you can see where you went through and where you came out. So go back through it again and you would just go through the original stitch up through the jacket, up through the same hole and you want to go back down through the same hole across from where you came out. Typically I will repeat this up to 10 times depending on the strength or size of the thread that I have available to me but typically you will know because the button will be pretty firmly in place and then you want to do the same thing with the other side creating a cross pattern like this. Once I have done that, the button will be securely fastened just as strong as the other ones that are on the jacket.
