You should select a tool appropriate and convenient for the job. Most problems encountered are due to seized, rusty bolts or screws. In serious cases the bolt or nut must be drilled out or cut open to permit removal. It is therefore important to select tools carefully to minimise the chance of rounding (damaging) a nut/bolt. Where possible a ring spanner or socket is the best choice.
When tightening bolts be careful not to overtighten - it's surprisinly easy, especially with aluminium bolts. Take especial care to avoid "cross-threading" where a bolt is tightened when not sitting straight. This can often be detected by the bolt becoming tight before the surfaces have mated (touched).
Remember: Anti-clockwise to undo, clockwise to tighten when looking down on a nut or bolt-head.
Tips for dealing with stuck nuts, bolts and screws:
Apply heavy downward force to ensure tool does not slip off/out, failure to do this is the most common cause of damage
Tap stuck threads (bolts) from one end with a hammer - sharp taps - to unstick
Heating (eg. with oxy torch) often loosens bolts on exhaust systems
Apply spray lubricant 12+ hrs. in advance e.g. WD40
Tap spanner/wrench with a hammer if you can't move it
Replace any damaged nuts/bolts/screws
