Transcript of This Video
When you study this music you also should honor the culture. And part of that is removing the shoes to honor these sacred objects. In Indian culture the feet because they're the bottom of our bodies and stand on the ground in the dirt and everything they are considered dirty and so you don't want to touch someone with your feet and so on. That is considered really insulting. On the other hand, if you honor someone, an elder or a teacher, a guru, you may honor them by touching their feet and that is kind of the ultimate sign of respect which even in these times it is starting to get lost but certain very traditional gurus expect that from their students. So we believe that we are just kind of a vehicle through which this knowledge or this divine sound travels through you know and whatever I can achieve as an artist it's of course due to my hard work to a large extent but it's also the blessings of my teacher so we honor our teachers almost like you know a deity so the teachers to us are an extension of the divine because they're the ones that have passed on this wonderful gift of music to us.
